Southern Nevada Immunization and Health Coalition Back-to-School Events
July 19, 2013 (Las Vegas) – The Southern Nevada Immunization and Health Coalition (SNIHC) and its partners will sponsor back-to-school immunization and health screenings between August 2 and August 24 to help families meet Nevada’s immunization requirements, and prepare kids for the coming school year.

No-cost immunizations will be provided to children younger than 19 who are uninsured, underinsured (current insurance doesn’t cover enough or all vaccines), have Medicaid or Nevada Check-Up, are American Indian or Alaskan Native. The vaccines will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Immunizations protect against many serious diseases including Mumps, Hepatitis A and B, and Varicella (chicken pox). Children attending school in Clark County must be immunized against Pertussis (whooping cough) before they can attend kindergarten and prior to entering the 7th grade. Some of the clinics will also offer dental and vision screenings.

“This is a great opportunity for parents to give their children the best possible start to the school year with safe, effective protection against vaccine-preventable diseases” said Rutu Ezhuthachan, MD, Medical Director for United Healthcare and Board Chair for SNIHC. “Making sure your children are up-to-date with the recommended immunizations helps provide a healthier school year for everybody – not just students, but their classmates, teachers, siblings and parents, as well!”

Nevada laws require certain immunizations for all school-age children in public and private schools at the start of the new school year. Parents should bring shot records for each of their children to the clinics. Parents can view recommendations for each child and print official records on the Nevada WebIZ Public Access Portal at izrecord.nv.gov. Additionally, staff with Nevada WebIZ, our immunization registry program, will be present to look up the child’s immunization history in case the family has difficulty locating old records.
