Reno, Nev. (May 2, 2013)—Timely immunizations for children 0-18 years to avoid vaccine-preventable diseases and knowledge about simple ways to protect children from serious injuries are the focus of this year’s Give Kids a Boost: Sun Valley Health and Safety Fair. The event takes place Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sun Valley Neighborhood Center, 115 West 6th Ave. This year’s presenting partners include: Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows: Sun Valley Teen Center; Immunize Nevada; Rotary Club of Reno Sunrise; Safe Kids Washoe County; Sun Valley Family Resource Center; Sun Valley General Improvement District; and Virginia Palmer Elementary School.

It’s no accident that Give Kids a Boost coincides with the first national Safe Kids Day to raise awareness about preventable injuries for children. In addition, free immunizations required for school entry will be available through the Washoe County Health District for children 0-18 years old.

“When a child dies or is seriously injured the lives of families and entire communities are changed forever,” said Melissa Krall, Safe Kids Washoe County Coordinator. “Tragedy doesn’t have to occur, and this event gives us the opportunity to educate families about how to prevent injury and disease.”

Booster seats from REMSA’s Point of Impact program will be distributed along with other safety gear from Safe Kids Washoe County on a first come, first served basis. Families can also participate in hands-on health, safety and educational activities offered by more than 30 community organizations.

“Getting children up-to-date on school required immunizations is important, but what’s also great about this event is the number of additional resources available for every age group,” added Heidi Parker, Immunize Nevada Executive Director.

The Rotary Club of Reno Sunrise began Give Kids a Boost in 2008 to provide a one-stop family event to ‘boost’ children’s safety, health, safety, development and literacy by bringing services to one location. Since its inception, thousands of families have benefited from the dozens of free resources available each year.
